"These are the times that try men's souls." So decreed Thomas Paine, December 23, 1776, a few short months after the American revolution broke the bonds of indenture to a foreign power. The new nations future was far from certain and this founding father was one of the most clear thinking individuals among them. The words he wrote then are no less meaningful today. His earlier work "Common Sense" was written for the common man and spoke in plain language of the need to decree independence from an oppressive government.
We shall endeavor to make a similar statement. Many Americans today have become polarized in their thinking. Influenced by media and clever political manipulations from both primary parties and the secondary parties. We fall prey to the machinations of irresponsible politicos with vested interests in pork barrel projects that only further their own agendas and personal desires.
"Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it." George Santayana was another great thinker that had a profound understanding of the nature of man. We all should have the circumspection to recognize the importance of remembering the lessons of the past. Applying those lessons to the future is the key to our survival as a nation, a society, and human beings worthy of a continued existence.
Today we are faced with challenges to our lifestyle, on every level, that no society has faced before. The loss of privacy and personal identity is ubiquitous. Terrorists who would kill us, without remorse given the opportunity, are the new barbarians at the gates. Other issues abound.
Our best hope and our children's best hope against all of these threats is education. We must understand the threats and learn the solutions to defeating them. History can give us many of the answers, others must come from new and creative thinking.
Unfortunately, with few exceptions, our public (and most private) schools are woefully inadequate in providing the intellectual and physical education that our children need to survive in an increasingly complex and changing societal environment.
Please come back soon for some common sense solutions to the pending dilemma we all will face in the all not too distant future.
